Yacouba and the Dogon Lights is led by Yacouba Diarra, born and raised in Burkina Faso, originating from the Mandinca people. He spent many years traveling throughout West Africa developing a style of music he calls Fato Foli or " crazy music". This music is an uplifting mix of the N’Goni, an African harp like instrument, and the modern electric sounds of Funk and Afro-beat. His songs speak of brotherhood and togetherness, a universal message of peace.

*N'Goni or African lute is a traditional melodic instrument of West Africa, used mainly Mali, as well as the savannahs of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Senegal. The N'Goni is an instrument of widespread use, first played by hunters in the savannah. In Burkina Faso, a legend says that a Senufo hunter invented the N’Goni, and since then it has been used in hunting ceremonies, honoring abundance. When used for entertainment purposes, at celebrations and holidays, such as weddings, tabaski or Ramadan, the N’Goni is often accompanied by other instruments, singing and clapping. N'Goni is a three or four-stringed instrument, made from a big gourd of spherical form or made of hollowed-out carved wood, covered with goatskin and the sound box shapes vary depending on the area. The handle made of round thin wood extends from the sound box, and is played like the guitar, plucking its strings. Traditionally, the N’Goni has 4 cords, but can have up to 7 chords in the modern day versions. The unique sound of the N'Goni is defined by its distinctive construction, and the rich history of its tradition.
